Dolores Huerta dies at 96

29 Oct 2026, 6:00 pm

Dolores Huerta has died at 96. Her family said she died on Wednesday. The Guardian reported that she died in California. NPR reported that the family said, through her foundation, that she died at home.

Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez. The union's work was in the fields, through strikes, boycotts, and protests in the 1960s and 1970s. Reuters described her roles as chief negotiator, strike organizer, lobbyist, and reformer. The place of that work was California's Central Valley.

She was credited with the union slogan "Sí, se puede." NPR gave the sense of the phrase as "Yes, it can be done." Reuters gave a loose translation as "Yes, we can," and noted its later use in the 2008 presidential campaign of Barack Obama. The slogan is part of the accounts of her life.

The Guardian reported that she was born in New Mexico in 1930. It said she followed her father, a miner and farm worker, into union work. Reuters said contracts negotiated by the United Farm Workers brought farmworkers job security, health care, retirement plans, and protections that included rest periods, toilets, drinking water, and limits on pesticides.

NPR reported that she kept a public schedule into her 90s, including marches and speeches on race, poverty, and the rights of women and LGBTQ people, through a foundation based in Bakersfield, California. The family's public statement asked for privacy. The statement called the death a loss to the family.

The recorded fact is her death at 96 on Wednesday. The organization named with her life is the United Farm Workers. The co-founder named with her is Cesar Chavez. The accounts place the death in California, and NPR's account says it was at home.
