Spain orders three days of mourning for Toledo

29 Oct 2026, 11:30 am

Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has announced three days of national mourning after the collision of two high-speed trains in Toledo province. The announcement was reported on Wednesday and carried in Thursday's accounts. The mourning is national. The length given is three days.

Thursday's reports put the death toll at at least 68. That figure is higher than the earlier report of at least 50 killed. Dozens of people were described as injured in the later briefs. The collision remains the one between Los Yébenes and Urda.

The crash was on Wednesday. One train hit another that had stopped on the tracks, later accounts said. An investigation was described as underway. Sánchez pledged a thorough investigation in the account carried from Wednesday.

The collision is the second deadly high-speed crash in Spain this year, those accounts said. A crash in January killed 46 people. That earlier toll is the comparison used in the Thursday briefs. This week's toll is the one now given as at least 68.

The United Nations secretary-general, António Guterres, was reported to be deeply saddened by the crash that killed more than 60 people. That reaction was relayed by his spokesman on Wednesday. It is a response to the toll, not a finding about the cause.

The recorded new facts are the mourning period and the higher death toll. The mourning is three days. The toll in Thursday's reports is at least 68. The place is still Toledo province.
