Poland's tribunal crisis splits the state

31 Oct 2026, 6:00 pm

Polish police have entered the Constitutional Tribunal after the suspension of its president, Bogdan Święczkowski. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska announced the suspension. The tribunal called the suspension a coup d'état. Euronews reported the entry on Friday.

Three protesters in support of the Law and Justice party were detained after they breached the tribunal's fence. Justice minister Waldemar Żurek asked that immunity be stripped from the tribunal's president and from vice president Bartłomiej Sochański so they can be charged. President Karol Nawrocki canceled a trip to Senegal and returned to Poland.

On Saturday, Poland's ambassador to Romania, Paweł Soloch, and Poland's ambassador to China, Jakub Kumoch, resigned. They resigned in protest of the suspension of Święczkowski. That pair of resignations was reported by 24 Kanal and Firstpost.

The building is the Constitutional Tribunal. The suspended official is its president. The police entry is the Friday event. The ambassador resignations are the Saturday event.

The tribunal's own description of the suspension is a coup d'état. The justice minister's request is about immunity and charges. The president's change of plan is the canceled Senegal trip. Three is the number of protesters detained.

The recorded crisis includes a suspension, a police entry, a fence breach, an immunity request, a canceled foreign trip, and two ambassador resignations. The countries of the embassies are Romania and China. No court outcome on the charges was included.
