Woman Unknown wins the Golden Lion in Venice

12 Sep 2026, 7:00 pm

The Venice International Film Festival has given the Golden Lion to Woman Unknown, the film by May el-Toukhy. The award was announced for the 83rd edition of the festival in Italy. Reporting from the festival named that film as the Golden Lion winner. The result assigns the prize to May el-Toukhy and to Woman Unknown.

The Golden Lion is the prize the festival result attached to Woman Unknown. No other film was listed as the Golden Lion winner in that announcement. The filmmaker credited for the winning film is May el-Toukhy. The setting of the announcement is the Venice festival in Italy.

Lee Chang-dong received the Grand Jury Prize for the film Possible Love. That prize was reported with the Golden Lion as part of the same festival result. Possible Love is the title named for the Grand Jury Prize. The announcement therefore names both a Golden Lion film and a Grand Jury Prize film.

Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor received the Special Jury Prize for the film NAZA. The Special Jury Prize was listed with the other main awards from the edition. Both names were attached to NAZA rather than to separate films. The prize adds a shared credit to the festival results.

The reported awards are the Golden Lion, the Grand Jury Prize, and the Special Jury Prize. The films named for those prizes are Woman Unknown, Possible Love, and NAZA. The filmmakers named are May el-Toukhy, Lee Chang-dong, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor. All of those results were tied to the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

The account of the festival presents those three prizes as the announced outcome. It places the ceremony and the awards in Italy. It does not add further prize winners beyond the three films named. The recorded result of the edition is therefore those awards and those names.
