Typhoon Dolphin hits eastern China and a Riyadh factory fire kills 16 workers

9 Aug 2026, 2:15 pm

Typhoon Dolphin made landfall in eastern China. About 1 million people were evacuated. About 1,300 flights from Shanghai were cancelled. Monsoon rains were also reported in parts of the Philippines, causing flooding.

A landfall is the point where the storm comes ashore. The evacuation and flight figures measure the disruption reported with that arrival. The note does not give a death toll for the Chinese landfall. It centers on people moved and flights cancelled.

The Philippine flooding is mentioned as monsoon rain in parts of the country. This particular note does not give a Philippine death toll. A separate report the same day said five people were killed in a landslide in Baguio, with at least three survivors and five people still missing. That landslide toll is distinct from the Shanghai flight count.

In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at least 16 migrant workers were killed in a major fire at a sofa manufacturing factory. The report identifies the city, the type of workplace, and the toll. It does not state the cause of the fire. It describes the dead as migrant workers.

The typhoon, the Baguio landslide, and the Riyadh fire are separate incidents. The million evacuations and 1,300 cancellations belong to Dolphin's arrival in eastern China. The five dead and five missing belong to the Baguio landslide. The 16 dead belong to the factory fire.

No combined casualty total is offered across the three events. No ship losses are listed for the typhoon in this note. The confirmed figures are 1 million evacuated, 1,300 Shanghai flights cancelled, five killed and five missing in the Baguio landslide, and at least 16 migrant workers killed in the Riyadh factory fire.
