Trump orders 50 percent tariffs on many Canadian goods as oil prices rise

22 Jul 2026, 2:55 pm

President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing 50 percent tariffs on many Canadian goods, including products covered by the USMCA. The order cites alleged discriminatory trade practices. The duties take effect in 30 days. Exemptions cover energy, potash, and products already under sector-specific tariffs.

The USMCA is the trade agreement linking the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Including covered products in the new tariffs means the order reaches goods that agreement would otherwise shape. The report does not list every product line. It states the rate, the delay of 30 days, and the named exemptions.

Fuel prices moved up during the same period of war-related disruption. Nationwide gasoline prices in the United States exceeded 4 dollars a gallon, the highest since June 17. Brent crude surpassed 90 dollars a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate reached 84.49 dollars. A later reading put Brent above 95 dollars, West Texas Intermediate at 86 dollars, and the United States average gasoline price at 4.06 dollars a gallon.

The tariff order and the fuel prices are related in time but are not the same policy. The tariffs target many Canadian goods, with energy among the exemptions. The oil and gasoline figures are market prices reported amid the Iran war's economic effects. The reports do not say the Canadian tariff caused the full oil move.

Canada canceled a joint opening ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge after the tariff announcement. The bridge links Detroit and Windsor. The cancellation was a diplomatic and ceremonial response reported alongside the trade step. It is not described as a closure of the bridge structure itself.

No retaliation list from Canada is included in the first tariff report. No estimate of the dollar value of the affected trade is given in that order's summary. The confirmed points are the 50 percent rate, coverage of many Canadian goods including USMCA products, a 30-day start, the stated exemptions, the gasoline and crude prices recorded that week, and the canceled bridge ceremony.
