Trump says the Iran ceasefire is over as Ali Khamenei is buried in Mashhad

8 Jul 2026, 7:40 pm

Hamas said its government would step down to allow a technocratic administration in Gaza, as set out in the October 2025 peace plan. The Board of Peace said it would assess whether those steps were carried out. Israel said it had killed five Hamas militants, including a Nukhba commander, west of the Yellow Line despite the ceasefire.

Former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended Ali Khamenei's funeral amid questions about his own survival of an early strike on his home. The body went to Qom, then to Najaf for viewing, with state funerals in Karbala and Najaf. The last stage in Mashhad was delayed an hour after Iran said United States forces struck a railway bridge on the route, and the body then reached the Imam Reza shrine.

Three commercial vessels were attacked near Hormuz, including Qatar's LNG tanker Al Rekayyat, owned by Nakilat, which was reported at risk of explosion. It was the first attack on a Qatari vessel since the war began on February 28. The United States revoked the temporary waiver on Iranian oil that had been part of the Islamabad memorandum and struck air-defence, coastal-surveillance, and missile sites, with explosions reported in Bandar Abbas, Bandar Sirik, and Qeshm.

President Donald Trump said the ceasefire was over and airstrikes would continue, while also saying negotiations could continue. Pakistan's foreign ministry called on all sides to honor the memorandum. A United States official said technical talks would still go on after two days of clashes. Iran fired 10 ballistic missiles at Al-Azraq air base in Jordan, Kuwait reported intercepts, and Qatar was hit by projectiles.

At least 14 people were killed in United States strikes over two days, Iran said. The International Maritime Organization said 6,000 seafarers were still stranded in the strait. Nakilat confirmed Al Rekayyat had been hit, with no casualties reported, and said the tanker was stranded near Oman. QatarEnergy paused efforts to restore LNG output at Ras Laffan and kept operations at a minimum.

Oil prices rose at least 5 percent, with Brent at 78.01 dollars and West Texas Intermediate at 73.86. Pakistan's KSE-100 index fell sharply. Defense minister Israel Katz said Israel was ready to strike Iran again if necessary. The week's diplomacy was a broken pause, not a new signed text.
