Trump and Sharif say Iran and the United States have a deal

14 Jun 2026, 4:05 pm

Early in the week prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had agreed to stop airstrikes on Iran at Donald Trump's request, while an official said attacks on southern Lebanon would continue. Israel then struck military sites in western and central Iran, the first such strikes since the April 7 ceasefire, as explosions were reported in Isfahan, Kermanshah, Tabriz, and Tehran. Iran said attacks on Israel would resume if the Lebanon war continued.

On June 11 Pakistan said it was still mediating. Emirati and Iranian officials met face to face for the first time since the war began on February 28. Iran's foreign ministry called the ceasefire with the United States practically meaningless after recent attacks, and Trump canceled a round of strikes he had threatened for that evening, saying talks were in progress.

The Revolutionary Guard struck American bases including Ali Al Salem in Kuwait and Sheikh Isa in Bahrain. Jordan said it shot down 20 missiles headed toward Azraq. Iran's military headquarters declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all traffic, and Central Command denied a complete closure, saying commercial ships were still moving. A South Korean gas carrier reached Ulsan, the second from that country to cross.

Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif said a ceasefire text to end the war was final and agreed. Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said a deal to extend the ceasefire, reopen Hormuz, and start nuclear talks had never been closer. On June 14 Sharif and Trump announced that Iran and the United States had agreed to end the war, extend the ceasefire by 60 days, and reopen the strait, with a signing set for Switzerland on Friday.

Trump authorized an end to the naval blockade imposed on April 13. Defense secretary Pete Hegseth said the United States had kept control of the strait and had guided 125 million barrels of oil through an operation called Project Freedom. Crude prices fell 5 percent after the announcement.

Qatari mediators traveled to Tehran to finish the text. The same day Israeli fire killed at least six people in Gaza, Lebanon said an attack on Beirut's Dahieh killed three and injured 16, and Israel said it had killed Hezbollah commander Ali Musa Daqduq. The political announcement and the strikes on Lebanon and Gaza were both in the June 14 record.
