Death of a Salesman leads the Tonys as Wenders pulls an old film

7 Jun 2026, 6:30 pm

The Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman won the most Tony Awards in 2026, with six, including Best Revival of a Play. Liberation, Ragtime, and Schmigadoon each won four, the next-highest total. Those four awards included Best Play, Best Revival of a Musical, and Best Musical, respectively.

The Tony list was the main performing-arts result of the week. A straight play led the count. Two musicals and another play shared the second tier.

In film, German director Wim Wenders withdrew his 1975 film The Wrong Move from distribution. Actress Nastassja Kinski objected to a nude scene filmed when she was 13 and called for the film to be re-edited. Wenders's decision took the picture out of circulation rather than issuing a new cut on the spot.

The objection was about a scene from the 1970s, not a 2026 production. The news was the withdrawal and the reason Kinski gave. No box-office figure was attached to the decision.

Pope Leo XIV began a six-day apostolic visit to Spain, the first papal visit to the country in 15 years. That trip was a religious calendar item in the same week as the Tonys. It was separate from the Broadway vote and the film withdrawal.

Culture that week therefore ran from a current awards night to a fifty-year-old film and a papal journey. Death of a Salesman left with the largest Tony haul. The Wrong Move left distribution after Kinski's objection.
