Sweden votes with the red-green bloc just ahead in early figures

13 Sep 2026, 4:00 pm

Sweden has voted to fill all 349 seats in the Riksdag. The election is the 2026 Swedish general election. Preliminary results were reported after the vote. Those figures are projections rather than a final cabinet.

Incumbent prime minister Ulf Kristersson sought to lead the Moderates into a second consecutive government. He also sought to include the Sweden Democrats in his cabinet. The Sweden Democrats are described as right-wing populist. His challenger was Magdalena Andersson, the former prime minister and leader of the SAP.

The preliminary count projects 175 seats for the Red-Greens and the Centre Party together. It projects 174 seats for the four Tidö parties. The gap in that projection is a single seat. The figures cover the full Riksdag of 349 seats.

Kristersson is the incumbent and the leader associated with the Tidö side of the result. Andersson is the opposition leader named against him. The projection places her bloc, with the Centre Party, on 175 seats. The four Tidö parties are placed on 174 seats.

The result as reported is still preliminary. It indicates a combined total rather than a completed government agreement. No resignation was part of this preliminary account. The only seat totals given are 175, 174, and the full chamber of 349.

Voters were choosing every seat in the Riksdag. The campaign choice described in the result was between a Kristersson government that would include the Sweden Democrats and the alternative led by Andersson. The early arithmetic favors the Red-Greens plus the Centre Party by one projected seat. A final government was not declared in that preliminary report.
