Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16 for a sixth consecutive World Cup clean sheet, a tournament record. Goalkeeper Unai Simon's scoreless run reached 609 minutes. Portugal was the opponent in that round-of-16 match.

Argentina beat Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16. Lionel Messi scored and became the first player to score in nine consecutive World Cup matches, counting the previous edition. He later became the first player to reach 10 World Cup assists since records began in 1966.

Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties in the round of 16 and reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 1954. The quarterfinals then ended with Argentina, Spain, France, and England, the four highest-ranked teams, all in the semifinals. It was the first time that had happened since the men's world ranking was introduced in 1992.

The third Esports World Cup opened in Paris. On the track, Emmanuel Wanyonyi broke the men's 1,000 metre world record in 2 minutes 11.83 seconds at the Herculis meeting in Monaco. The International Olympic Committee lifted its ban on Russian athletes for the Los Angeles Summer Olympics, after bans tied to doping and the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

At Wimbledon, Linda Noskova won her first major by beating compatriot Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Jannik Sinner defended the gentlemen's title by beating Alexander Zverev 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4, with the first two sets decided in tiebreaks. Seventy-two European Parliament members called for an investigation of FIFA president Gianni Infantino after the Balogun red-card suspension was lifted.

The China Anti-Doping Agency said Shanghai Sharks player Hassan Whiteside tested positive for oxandrolone and clomifene during the Chinese Basketball Association playoffs, exposing him to a possible two-year ban. The World Cup semifinalists and the Wimbledon champions were decided in the same stretch of days. The doping notice was a separate basketball item, not a World Cup suspension.
