Paraguay drew 1-1 with Germany and won 4-3 on penalties in the round of 32. President Santiago Pena declared a national holiday after the result. The win was called the largest World Cup upset since 2018 and the fourth-largest in the tournament's history.

Mexico won a knockout match for the first time since 1986, beating Ecuador. The co-host's win moved it on from the group stage it had opened with a victory over South Africa. Ecuador was the opponent in the reported knockout result.

Norway beat Brazil 2-1 in the round of 16 and reached the quarterfinals for the first time. Brazil's loss was its earliest World Cup exit since 1990. The score and the historical note were both part of the same report.

Argentina beat Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32. Lionel Messi scored and, with that match, became the first player to make 30 World Cup appearances, to score 20 World Cup goals, and to score in eight consecutive World Cup matches including the previous edition. Egypt drew 1-1 with Australia after extra time and won 4-2 on penalties to reach the round of 16.

FIFA declared American forward Folarin Balogun eligible to face Belgium after an intervention by president Donald Trump. It suspended his ban under Article 27 of the disciplinary code, put the ban on one-year probation, and left the red card itself in place. Reports called it the first time since automatic suspensions began that a World Cup red-card ban was overturned instead of served.

Alexandra Eala became the first Filipino singles player to reach the fourth round of a major by beating defending champion Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon third round. Seventy-two members of the European Parliament called for an investigation of FIFA president Gianni Infantino after the Balogun decision. The sporting week mixed knockout scores, a disciplinary reversal, and a tennis result.
