Israeli strikes kill at least 47 in southern Lebanon after the Iran deal

19 Jun 2026, 7:55 am

Hezbollah said it had assurances from Iran that an Israeli withdrawal from occupied southern Lebanon would be a demand in the next phase of talks with the United States, before any nuclear deal. Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said continued occupation of Lebanon would violate the Iran-United States agreement. The argument was about sequencing, not a completed pullout.

Israeli strikes killed at least four people across southern Lebanon, and Iran's military said Israel had violated the Lebanon ceasefire 84 times since the agreement was announced. A later wave killed at least 47 people and injured 97. The United States then said Israel and Hezbollah had agreed a ceasefire.

Four Israeli soldiers were killed in a shootout with Hezbollah near Nabatieh. At least three more people were killed in other strikes across the south as Israel published the map of areas it said it would keep holding. Netanyahu ruled out withdrawal even as the ceasefire language returned.

In Ukraine, a Russian strike set the Dormition Cathedral at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra ablaze and heavily damaged it, killing nine people including five rescue workers who had been at fires in Kharkiv. The Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kyiv were also hit. Ukraine later launched what it called its largest drone attack on Moscow, hitting the Moscow Refinery, and Zelenskyy warned that if Ukraine burned, Moscow would burn.

Russia said it would answer with regular massive group strikes. Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov used that phrase for the response. Residents of Moscow reported oil falling and black smoke after the refinery strike.

In Sudan, Emergency Lawyers said nine civilians were killed in a Rapid Support Forces drone strike on a passenger vehicle in North Darfur, and another drone set the Um Bayada market on fire. Catholic priest Yohanna Al-Amin Komkome and two associates were killed in Kauda near the Nuba Mountains, with the SPLM-N accused. The United Nations envoy called on RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to halt attacks on El-Obeid.
