Knicks and Spurs reach the NBA Finals as PSG retains the Champions League
The New York Knicks eliminated the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games with a 130-93 win to take the NBA Eastern Conference. It was their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999. They were to face the winner of the Western Conference finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs then defeated the defending champion Thunder in seven games. The series win sent San Antonio to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014, against the Knicks. The conference results set a Finals pairing of a returning East finalist and a West side that had not been there since 2014.
In hockey, the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Montreal Canadiens in five games in the Eastern Conference Final. The series put Carolina in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006. The International Ice Hockey Federation said it would decide Russia's participation in the coming season case by case, after a January decision that had lifted the ban on Russian teams.
Paris Saint-Germain won a second Champions League title by beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time. The final was at Puskas Arena in Budapest. PSG went in as defending champions and left with the trophy again.
Celebrations in Paris turned into clashes. Police arrested more than 280 people after vandalism, arson, an attempted intrusion into a police station, and disruptions to traffic and public transport. The arrests were a public-order story attached to the sporting result, not a change to the score.
The Indian Premier League ended with Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeating the Gujarat Titans in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Canada, Mexico, and the United States announced coordinated travel health measures for arrivals from Ebola-affected areas in central and eastern Africa ahead of the World Cup. Those measures were the week's main World Cup development before the tournament itself opened in June.
