Lake Kariba ferry deaths reach 72 and a Flores earthquake kills at least 47

16 Aug 2026, 11:25 am

At least 44 people were killed when a ferry sank on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. A later count said the death toll had risen to 72 after twelve more bodies were recovered. The rise from 44 to 72 is the movement reported during the week. The sinking is the same incident, not a second ferry.

Lake Kariba is the body of water named as the site. A ferry sinking leaves a search for people who were aboard. The report gives deaths and, in the later note, additional bodies recovered. It does not state how many people had been on the vessel in these short items.

Separately, at least 47 people were killed and several more injured when a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the coast of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The magnitude and the island are both stated. Several more injured is the injury wording, without a precise injury count.

The Zimbabwe ferry and the Indonesia earthquake are unrelated disasters that produced death tolls in the same week. The ferry toll moved from at least 44 to 72. The quake toll is at least 47. No agency offered a combined figure.

Twelve additional bodies account for the step from the earlier ferry toll toward 72, as the later report describes a rise after those recoveries. The arithmetic of every missing person is not fully itemized. The number published at the end of the week for the ferry is 72.

No cause of the sinking beyond the fact of the capsizing is given. No aftershock count is given for Flores. The confirmed tolls are 72 dead from the Lake Kariba ferry, after an earlier report of at least 44, and at least 47 dead from the magnitude 7.7 Flores earthquake.
