India says the Naxalite insurgency has been brought to an end

30 Mar 2026, 12:40 pm

India said it has ended the Naxalite insurgency. Home Minister Amit Shah reported that most of the remaining Naxal fighters had been killed, arrested, or had surrendered. He tied that outcome to intensified security operations. The statement was made on March 30.

The Naxalite movement, also called the Naxalite-Maoist insurgency, is a long-running armed campaign by Maoist groups in parts of India. An insurgency is an armed challenge to the state's control, usually outside a conventional front line. A home minister is the cabinet member responsible for internal security. Shah's report is the basis of the government's claim that the campaign is over.

Killed, arrested, or surrendered are three different ends to a fighter's role in an armed group. The government said most of those still active had met one of those fates. It did not publish a count of people in each category. The word most leaves open the possibility that some fighters remain, even as the state declares the insurgency ended.

Intensified security operations means a heavier use of police and other forces than in the period before the announcement. The report does not name the districts, the dates of the last clashes, or the units involved. The political fact is the declaration of victory by the Indian government. The operational fact offered in support is Shah's account of what happened to most remaining fighters.

Governments sometimes declare an insurgency over while small armed bands still exist. The wording here is that India says the insurgency has ended, and that the home minister says most remaining fighters are dead, in custody, or have given themselves up. Those are official claims reported as such. No independent casualty table is attached.

New Delhi's position on March 30 is that the Naxalite insurgency is finished. Amit Shah said intensified operations left most remaining fighters killed, arrested, or surrendered. No precise headcount was given. The announcement is the government's formal end to a conflict that had lasted for decades.
