Jakarta students protest fuel prices and the free meals program

12 Jun 2026, 12:10 pm

Hundreds of students protested in Indonesia against President Prabowo Subianto. They cited a fuel-price increase, tensions inside government, and what they called mismanaged spending on the Free Nutritious Meals program. The meals program was a food policy pulled into a street protest about the budget.

The demonstration did not come with a new menu rule or a published audit in the same reports. It established that the meals scheme was one of the grievances beside fuel. Fuel itself was the economic link to the war still disrupting oil.

Oil prices fell 5 percent when Trump and Sharif announced a deal to reopen Hormuz and end the blockade. Earlier in the week indexes had risen when a strike wave was called off and SpaceX listed. The meals protest in Jakarta was a local political response to prices, not the cause of the global oil move.

Sri Lanka had raised fuel prices the previous week under an IMF-linked reform. India's airline support package was also a fuel story. Indonesia's protest showed another government hearing the same shock in the street, this time tied to a nutrition program.

No death toll was attached to the Jakarta student protest in the reports of that day. The scale given was hundreds of students. The policy named was the free meals program alongside the fuel hike.

Food policy and fuel policy met in one march. The Free Nutritious Meals program was the nutrition item. The price of fuel was the economic item. Together they were why students said they were in the street.
