Ebola deaths pass 1,000 as measles and cyclosporiasis counts climb

24 Jul 2026, 3:25 pm

The death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded 1,000, according to African CDC director Jean Kaseya. Oxford University reported that the first volunteer had been injected with a vaccine aimed at the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain causing the outbreak. The death figure and the first injection were separate developments in the same epidemic. Neither report said the outbreak had been contained.

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 2,318 confirmed measles cases in the first seven months of 2026. That count was described as the highest annual total since 1991. The figure covers confirmed cases in that seven-month span. It is a measles total, not an Ebola total.

The cyclosporiasis outbreak continued to grow. Cases in Michigan exceeded 7,000 and then surpassed 8,100. The CDC said the outbreak, caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, had spread to Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Those four states were named as additional to the earlier spread. Michigan remained the state with the repeated case updates.

Bangladesh's measles death toll exceeded 800. The deaths were blamed on vaccination gaps and a weak response. That outbreak is distinct from the United States measles count and from Ebola. The report does not give a case total for Bangladesh alongside the death toll above 800.

In Sudan's Blue Nile state, the Sudan Doctors Union reported a dengue fever outbreak that killed 39 people and left 300 infected. Dengue is a separate disease from Ebola, measles, and cyclosporiasis. The figures are a death count and an infection count for that state. They are not folded into the Congo Ebola toll.

No single agency issued one combined total for all of these outbreaks. Each number stays with the disease and place named in its report. The week's health picture is an Ebola death toll above 1,000 with a first vaccine injection, a United States measles total of 2,318, Michigan cyclosporiasis above 8,100, Bangladesh measles deaths above 800, and 39 dengue deaths with 300 infections in Blue Nile.
