The impeachment trial of Philippine vice president Sara Duterte began in the Senate. The process had been moving for weeks. This was the opening of the trial itself.

French deputy Marine Le Pen announced she would run for president in 2027 as the National Rally nominee. It would be her fourth bid. The announcement was a candidacy, not an election result.

At the NATO summit in Ankara, president Donald Trump again said the United States should control Greenland and that it could remove troops from Europe over the dispute. He also said Washington would lift sanctions imposed on Turkey in 2020 over its purchase of Russian missiles. The prime ministers of Greenland and Denmark, Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Mette Frederiksen, said Greenland was not for sale.

Virginie Ruffenach of the pro-France coalition was elected president of the Congress of New Caledonia, defeating Dominique Foch of the pro-independence bloc by 28 votes to 25. Senegal's Constitutional Council struck down a bill that would have expanded the National Assembly and the prime minister's powers and limited the president, after Bassirou Diomaye Faye challenged it. Thousands in Budapest protested prime minister Peter Magyar's attempt to remove president Tamas Sulyok.

Israel set October 27 as the date for Knesset elections. El Salvador's Nuevas Ideas nominated president Nayib Bukele for a third term after the assembly abolished term limits in 2025. Former Qatari emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani died at 74, and Ukraine's prime minister Yulia Svyrydenko stepped down as president Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a cabinet reshuffle.

Nigeria's president Bola Tinubu said security forces had rescued all 46 students and staff abducted in May from schools in Oyo State, arresting eight suspects and killing some abductors. Algeria said its ambassador would return to Mali and both countries would reopen airspace, easing a rift that followed Algeria's shooting down of a Malian drone in April 2025. Those were political repairs and a rescue, not European elections, but they belonged to the same week.
