Tribal fighting in South Darfur kills hundreds as Kordofan is struck again

4 Jun 2026, 7:30 am

Around 350 people were reported killed in South Darfur during clashes between the Beni Halba and Salamat tribes over five days. The figure covered that burst of communal fighting, not the whole civil war. It followed earlier reports of dozens dead in the same tribal conflict.

A drone strike hit a market in the Abu Zaeima area of Hamrat Al Sheikh in North Kordofan and killed 11 people. The Sudanese army's Fourth Infantry Division said it had repelled a major attack by the Rapid Support Forces and the SPLM-N on Al-Barka in Blue Nile. The market deaths and the army's claim were separate items from the same war.

In Somalia, clashes continued in Mogadishu after the opposition Somali Future Council was attacked by forces loyal to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud ahead of planned protests. Former prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire accused Mohamud of ordering an assault to eliminate the opposition. Defense minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi accused former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Khaire of orchestrating a coup attempt.

Russia's strikes on Ukraine killed at least 23 people and injured more than 100, including in Kyiv and Dnipro. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko reported power cuts and fires in Podil. The Ukraine toll was a European war running parallel to Sudan and the Horn of Africa.

A cattle raid in South Sudan's Unity State killed 14 people, including four children. Allied Democratic Forces fighters killed 16 civilians in a village in Beni Territory in North Kivu. Eight people were killed and 42 injured when a bus hit a land mine between Bamako and Kayes in Mali.

The week's violence was not one front. Darfur's tribal toll, Kordofan's market, Mogadishu's political fight, and the Ukraine strikes each had their own numbers. None of those reports claimed a ceasefire was holding on the ground they described.
