All ten Broad Peak climbers die, a Nazca plane crash kills 13, and a Japan quake kills at least 13

1 Aug 2026, 5:25 pm

All ten climbers caught in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan were confirmed dead. Nirmal Purja was among them. A day earlier, two bodies and a body part had been recovered after the avalanche buried the ten, and Purja was still listed as missing. The later report closes that search with all ten dead.

Broad Peak is a high mountain used by climbing expeditions. An avalanche is a slide of snow and ice. The report gives the toll as the entire group of ten. It does not describe the altitude of the camp or the route they were on.

In Peru, 13 people, including 11 tourists, were killed when a small aircraft crashed near the Nazca Lines. The plane had departed Pisco, in Ica. The Nazca Lines are the place named beside the crash site. The toll counts everyone killed on the aircraft as 13, with tourists making up 11 of them.

In Japan, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck central Kumamoto Prefecture. A tsunami alert was issued for the western Kyushu coast. At least 13 people were killed. The report gives magnitude, location, the coastal alert, and the death toll.

These are three separate disasters in Pakistan, Peru, and Japan. The matching number of 13 in the Japan quake and the Peru crash is a coincidence of two different reports, not one incident. The Pakistan toll is ten climbers. No combined worldwide total is offered.

Causes beyond the avalanche, the crash, and the earthquake are not given. No survivors are reported from the Broad Peak group or from the Nazca flight. The Japan quake toll is stated as at least 13, which leaves open a later revision that this note does not provide. The confirmed counts are ten dead on Broad Peak, 13 dead near the Nazca Lines, and at least 13 dead in Kumamoto.
