28 May 2026, 9:40 am

The death toll from the under-construction building collapse in Angeles, Philippines, rose to four on May 25, with 16 people still missing. By May 31 it had risen to twelve. The search had started after the May 24 collapse of a nine-story condo-hotel project in which a Malaysian citizen was among the early dead and dozens were still unaccounted for.

In Angola, the search after a landslide at a gold mine in Canacassala ended with 28 people killed and four rescued. The illegal shaft had collapsed three days before that final count. The figure matched the earlier report of miners buried when the shaft gave way.

A chemical explosion at a paper mill in Longview, Washington, killed one person, injured ten, and left nine missing on May 26. The death toll later rose to eight. California's Garden Grove chemical emergency was already underway, but Longview was a separate blast with its own missing-person list.

In Kenya, sixteen students were killed and 79 injured in a dormitory fire at a girls' school in Gilgil, Nakuru County. Investigators then treated the fire as arson. Eight students were arrested as suspects, and the school's board of management was dissolved amid suspicions of negligence over fire safety.

A blast at a building storing mining explosives in Namhkam Township, Shan State, Myanmar, killed more than 55 people, including six children, and injured 74. In Indonesia five people were killed, at least 19 injured, and three were missing after a suspected World War II shell exploded under a stilt house in Papua. Five people were killed and another injured when an illegal mine collapsed in Huize County, Yunnan.

Road crashes added to the toll. A truck overturned in Tangail District, Bangladesh, killing 15 and wounding ten. A minibus hit a passenger bus in Mardan, Pakistan, killing 17 and wounding five. In Belgium four people, including two children, were killed and five injured when a train hit a school bus in Buggenhout.
