BioNTech halts production of its COVID-19 vaccine

5 May 2026, 9:50 am

The German biotechnology company BioNTech said it will halt production of its COVID-19 vaccine. The company cited drastic restructuring plans. Production of the vaccine is left to its partner, Pfizer. The announcement was made on May 5.

BioNTech is the German firm that developed a leading COVID-19 vaccine with the American drug company Pfizer. Halting production means BioNTech will no longer manufacture the doses. Pfizer remains the producer under the partnership described in the announcement. Restructuring means the company is changing its size or its priorities in a major way.

COVID-19 vaccines were produced at huge scale during the pandemic and in later booster campaigns. A decision by one of the original manufacturers to stop making the shot is a change in that industry. The report does not say that the vaccine is being withdrawn from use. It says BioNTech will stop producing it and that Pfizer will be the sole producer.

Drastic restructuring is the company's own description of the plan, as reported. No figure for job losses at BioNTech is included in this announcement. No date is given for the last batch. The commercial fact is the end of BioNTech's manufacturing role for this vaccine.

Partnerships in pharmaceuticals often split research and manufacturing. Here the research partner is stepping back from production and the partner company continues it. Patients and governments that buy the vaccine would, on this account, be supplied by Pfizer alone. The report does not discuss contracts with particular countries.

BioNTech will no longer produce its COVID-19 vaccine. Pfizer is left as the sole manufacturer under the partnership. The company tied the halt to a drastic restructuring. The decision was announced on May 5.
