António José Seguro elected president of Portugal

8 Feb 2026, 1:40 pm

Socialist Party candidate António José Seguro was elected president of Portugal. He defeated Chega leader André Ventura in the second round. The vote was the 2026 Portuguese presidential election. A second round is the runoff held when an earlier ballot does not produce a winner under the election rules.

The president of Portugal is the head of state, elected separately from the parliament that supports the government. Seguro ran as the candidate of the Socialist Party. Ventura leads CHEGA. The report stated that Seguro won and that Ventura was the opponent he beat.

No vote percentages were included for either candidate. The account did not say how many votes separated them. It identified the contest as a second round, so this was not the first ballot of the election. The named outcome was Seguro's election to the presidency.

Postponement of voting in some municipalities was expected because of recent windstorms, including the impact of Storm Kristin. Those delays affected part of the map rather than the entire country. The report still recorded Seguro as elected. It did not say the delayed stations changed the result.

Storm Kristin was the named storm linked to the expected postponements. A state of weather severe enough to move polling stations is a logistical fact sitting beside a national result. The presidential item and the storm item appeared together in the election coverage. The winner remained the Socialist candidate.

António José Seguro of the Socialist Party was elected president, defeating André Ventura of CHEGA in the runoff. Some municipal voting was expected to be postponed because of windstorms, including Storm Kristin. Percentages were not reported. The office went to Seguro.
