Since the introduction of bail reform in 2019, New York City has been at the forefront of criminal justice reforms aimed at reducing incarceration rates and addressing systemic issues within the legal system. These reforms have included changes to the bail system, aiming to ensure that individuals are not detained pre-trial due to inability to pay bail. The ‘Raise the Age’ law has also shifted how juvenile offenders are treated, moving most 16- and 17-year-olds out of the adult criminal justice system. This article explores the ongoing debates, successes, and challenges of these reforms.
